URTEXT EDITION [more...]

This is an urtext/critical/scholarly/scientific edition (or a simple re-engraving). Any commentary or critical apparatus, if protected by copyright, should not be included in the scan(s) available here. This edition was published by Bärenreiter in Germany over 25 years ago and is in the public domain in its country of origin.

In Canada, new editions/re-engravings of public domain works (when not including new original material) should be in the public domain due to failing to meet the threshold of originality. In most European Union countries, these editions (except new original material) are generally protected for no more than 25 years from publication (30 years in Poland). In the United States, copyright can only apply to new creative work, and the re-engraving of a public domain piece (not including new additions of creative material) should not qualify for a new copyright, despite copyright claims (which properly would only apply to new material).

You may need to check the publication date and details of the work's first publication in order to determine the work's copyright status, especially for the United States.

More information can be found here.

The v1 part needs re-numbering: p 1234 should be 2345, pp 4567 should be 6789. The first 5 measures of p3 need to be moved to the end of p2. Same for v2. Turns in va vc parts in the slow and quiet movement are perhaps best avoided.

This Viola 1 part is an arrangement using some of the clarinet part. Violin 1 plays a special part incorporating most of the clarinet part. Violin 2, Viola 2 and Cello use the original Violin 2, Viola and Cello parts.
To play in a solo viola and string quartet combination, the 1st viola player can use the clarinet in C part (all treble clef) 551231 or the Vieuxtemps Grand Duo version (646802, mostly treble clef); Ritter's arrangement of the Larghetto (776910) is all alto clef.

Misc. Notes There are two bars missing in the Trio II to the Minuet. These bars fall between pages 22 and 23. The first clarinet G on page 23 belongs in the first of these bars. These bars are bars 99, 100 on page 19 or the Feldmahler complete score on this page. Also, at the conclusion of the Minuet, both endings contain three beats. Rather obviously, the last beat must be omitted when going to Trio II and at the last iteration of the Minuet.

NMA score
NMA report (German)
Extra Information The autograph score was already lost by 1800, even before the work was first published. It was published in 1802 (1809?) by Artaria (plate 1536) and by Johann André (plate 1602) - it is not presently clear which published the work first (intriguing, since according to NMA they are not simply the same edition co-published.) (André then published a piano arrangement of the variations finale, released by November 1803 (briefly reviewed in the Nov. 1803 AMZ, p.112.))
