拉尔夫·沃恩·威廉斯(1872-1958)是英国作曲家、著作家和指挥家。他在生于英国格洛斯特郡(Gloucestershire)的下安普内(Down Ampney)，父亲是当地的一个教区牧师。六岁起威廉斯在他的姨妈指导下学习音乐，七岁开始学小提琴。在查特豪斯(Charterhouse)学校读书时，他是学校乐队的小提琴手，在剑桥进三一学院后，他开始学习作曲。1890年夏，沃恩·威廉斯来到了慕尼黑，在这里他聆听了瓦格纳的乐剧《女武神》，从而更加坚定了他早已立下的志愿----当一名作曲家。回国后，沃恩·威廉斯进了皇家音乐学院学习和声与作曲。1897年，他来到柏林，拜M.布鲁赫为师，1909年又到巴黎求教于拉威尔。在这求学期间，他先尝试着写了一些歌曲，不久后便投入大型乐曲的创作。

主要作品

在长达五十多年的音乐创作生涯中,沃恩·威廉斯写出了大量的作品.他的《三首诺福克狂想曲》是以民间主题为基础写成的;《塔利斯主题幻想曲》则是根据英国十六世纪宗教音乐家汤姆斯·塔利斯(T.Tallis,1505?-1585)的赞美诗写成的;他还写过不少歌剧,有《牲口贩》、《恋爱中的约翰爵士》、《奔向大海的骑士》、《毒吻》等;他根据英国作家班扬(J.Bunyan,1628-1688)的小说《天路历程》而写的同名道德剧也很有名;而沃恩·威廉斯的最大成就在于他的九部交响曲,其中以《伦敦》交响曲(第二) 、《田园》交响曲(第三)和《D大调交响曲》(第五)最为著名.沃恩·威廉斯还写过不少室内乐曲、弥撒曲、协奏曲(如《云雀飞翔》)以及一些电影音乐和芭蕾舞剧(《柯尔老王》、《圣诞之夜》、《婚礼的日子》等)，他的《南极》交响曲(第七)就是根据他为电影《南极的苏格兰人》(曾获1949年布拉格电影节一等奖)所写的配音改编而成的。

影响

沃恩·威廉斯经常致力于音乐普及活动.他与霍尔斯特等人编辑的《英国赞美诗》影响极大,在出版五十周年时印数已达五百万册;他还亲自参与筹备英国农村传统的由合唱队和器乐演奏能手联合举行的表演赛会,参加演奏,并为赛会作曲 (《塔利斯主题幻想曲》就是在这种赛会上首演的),他认为,这种场合最适合传播具有高度艺术性的专业音乐创作,最便于在民间音乐生活中灌输纯粹的音乐艺术.

1958年8月26日,本来安排早上要在伦敦爱乐乐团为沃恩·威廉斯《e小调交响曲》(第九)录音的,可是就在这天早上,八十六岁高龄的作曲家突然在他伦敦的寓所中平静地去世了。
