Dan Zhaoyi Dan Zhaoyi

Being a well-known Chinese piano educator, DanZhaoyi ​serves as a tenured professor at the Shenzhen ArtsSchool, as a distinguished professor at the Sichuan Conservatory of Music, andas a guest professor at the Central Conservatory of Music, the Shanghai Conservatoryof Music, the China Conservatory of Music, and the like. He is a member of the ChineseMusicians Association, formerly holding the post of vice president of theGuangdong and the Shenzhen Musician Association. Presently, he assumes officeas the consultant of the Piano Society of the Chinese Musicians Association andas the honorary president of the Shenzhen Piano Association.

He graduated from the Piano Department of theSichuan Conservatory of Music in 1964, studying piano under Professor HeHuixian and Professor Lin Ruizhi successively. In 1961, Dan Zhaoyi was sent bythe Sichuan Conservatory of Music to Beijing for further studies under ProfessorZhou Guangren, a famous piano educator, laying a solid foundation for his lifelongcareer.

Dan Zhaoyi achieved great success in morethan 50 years of his piano teaching. His most famous students - Li Yundi, ChenSa, and Zhang Haochen - won prizes one after another in the ChopinInternational Piano Competition in Poland, the Leeds International PianoCompetition in Great Britain, the Van Cliburn International Piano Competitionin the United States, and other top competitions in the world. This is of historicsignificance in the Chinese piano education and performances. After that, his studentsincluding Zuo Zhang, He Qizhen, Xue Xiaoqiu, Pan Linzi, Gu Jingdan and Xu Qimade outstanding achievements in international competitions successively. Atotal of 21 students received 63 awards in international piano competitions, includingwinning the first prize for 23 times.

Dan Zhaoyi has been committed to thetheoretical research on piano teaching. During his free time, he keeps writing,and has brought out monographs, compiled more than ten textbooks, and publisheddozens of thesis. He is often invited to act as a judge in international anddomestic piano competitions. He frequently leads his students to participate incultural exchanges and performances at home and abroad, runs piano master classes,and gives lectures on piano teaching and so on.

Dan Zhaoyi has in-depth thinking on the basicpiano theory. He has made a fruitful summary in combination with decades of histeaching experience. In addition, he spared no effort to incorporate hiscognition that was acquired from his systematic studies into his book Basic Piano Course in A New Way. Editedby him and published by the People's Music Publishing House, this book is China’sfirst one that is characterized by theoretical support, national features,scientific system and innovation characteristics. It will make a positiveimpact on standardizing and guiding the basic piano teaching.

Professor Dan Zhaoyi won national, provincialand municipal awards for many times because of his outstanding achievements. Heattained more than 20 individual honors successively, including the "AdvancedNational Cultural Worker”, the “Ou Yongxi Excellent Music Education Award” by theMinistry of Culture, the “Excellent Teacher” by Sichuan Province, GuangdongProvince and Shenzhen City, the “May 1 Labor Medal” by Guangdong Province, the “CivilizedCitizen” by Shenzhen City, and one of the 30 outstanding figures in ShenzhenSpecial Economic Zone in 30 years.
