Biography
Lanzhou Symphony Orchestra is one of the most active symphony orchestras in the northwest of China. It was initially founded in 1973, separated from Lanzhou Song & Dance Theatre in 2008 and formally established to operate. In the past 40 years, Lanzhou Symphony Orchestra successfully gave tens of concerts with diverse genres and styles. In the long term of performances, it forms a unique artistic style which is extremely popular with audiences. Moreover, Lanzhou Symphony Orchestra is even honored as a ‘golden card’ of urban culture in terms of international cultural exchange.
Their performance style is fresh and glamorous involving various songs, especially when they perform the works from the western China, the imposing sensation of desert and river, as well as the historical culture of the Silk Road, can be easily expressed by sweeping over strings.
Lanzhou Symphony Orchestra made many gratifying achievements in the previous years. They went to five provinces in west of China as well as Beijing, Shanghai, Xiamen, Zhuhai, Zhongshan etc. In the fall of 2005, Lanzhou Symphony Orchestra held Classic-Dunhuang symphony concerts successfully in Lanzhou, Beijing and Sydney causing great response. In January 2007, they held the Silk Road of China Classic Concert at the Golden Concert Hall in Vienna, Austria, which was acclaimed by European audiences.
Since 2006, Lanzhou Symphony Orchestra accompanied the large-scale dance drama Dunhuang My Dreamland which is one of the top ten finest repertoires of ‘National Stage Arts Fine Project’. They held performances in many domestic cities in China and several European cities, following the footprint of Dunhuang My Dreamland. In May 2008, Lanzhou Symphony Orchestra was invited by NCPA to give performances for the second China Orchestra Festival. In August 2010, they were invited to Shanghai World Expo to participate in Lanzhou Performance Week with great success. In October of the same year, Lanzhou Symphony Orchestra took part in the Northwest Music Festival in Xi’an and won three gold awards on performance, creation and conductor; additionally, they made great achievements in China National Symphony Festival. In September 2013, they went to Yinchuan for the second West Symphony Orchestra Performance Week and won outstanding performance award. Moreover, in June 2015 they were highly acclaimed in the third China National West Symphony Orchestra Performance Week held in Urumchi.
