Biography
Andy Shen Liu, countertenor. Born in 2000, Andy Shen Liu has already made his mark on China’s burgeoning music scene starring the roles of Sem and Jaffet in the China premieres of Britten’s Noye’s Fludde in a production of Northern Ireland Opera, directed by Oliver Mears, and Cupid in John Blow’s Venus and Adonis. He has also been featured in new Chinese operas, notably The Village Teacher (2009) at Beijing’s National Centre for the Performing Arts, where he played Gherardino in the new production of Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi .
Andy Shen has given recitals at the L’Oratoire du Louvre (Paris) and Eglise Saint-Sauveur (La Rochelle) on invitation by Unesco and Forbidden City Concert Hall (Beijing) and QinTai Concert Hall (Wuhan). He made his debut at Lincoln Center’s David Geffen Hall (New York) with Detroit Symphony Orchestra in 2013. His Germany debut was in Kongresshalle (Saarbrücken) and Herkulessaal (Munich) along with Deutsche Radio Philharmonie and Tölzer Knabenchor.
From an early age, Andy Shen has won numerous awards for his outstanding musicianship. As a boy soprano soloist and a member of the Children’s Choir affiliated to the China National Symphony Orchestra, Liu has appeared in major operatic productions around the world, from Zhang Yimou’s Turandot at the Beijing Olympic Stadium to Tosca at National Centre for the Performing Arts, as well as David Freeman’s Carmen at Royal Albert Hall in London.
Andy Shen premiered many contemporary Chinese works, including Xiaogang Ye’s Twilight of Himalayas, Op. 68, a piece specially written for him, which was recorded and released on the Deutsche Grammophon label. Under the baton of Will Humburg, he sang in the China premiere of Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms with Shanghai Opera House and Hangzhou Philharmonic as a highlight of the worldwide Bernstein centenary celebrations in China.
Andy Shen has performed in Beijing International Music Festival, Shanghai Music In The Air (MISA), Shanghai International Art Festival, Festival Classique au Port and Beijing International Baroque Music Festival. He has collaborated with renowned conductors such as Yu Long, Lu Jia, Yongyan Hu, Yu Feng, Yang Hongnian, Yang Li, Hansjörg Albrecht and Nicholas Chalmers, and with Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Deutsche Radio Philharmonie, Tölzer Knabenchor, China Philharmonic Orchestra, China National Symphony Orchestra, Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra, Wuhan Philharmonic etc.
Andy Shen has also appeared on national and international TV, including his live performances on CCTV, Beijing TV Spring Festival’s Gala and a France 3 documentary about his musical life. His singing voice has also been featured in major films and TV series. In 2011, he released his first album of opera arias in 2011, with a second due for release soon. Andy Shen is a recent graduate of The Juilliard School’s Pre-College where he studied with Lorraine Nubar and is currently studying under Michael Chance CBE at Royal Academy of Music (London).
His upcoming highlights include originating the role o Prosecutor in Cummings and Goerings at Royal Academy of Opera and taking the title role of Vivaldi’s Opera Il Teuzzone conducted by Jordi Savall at The Philharmonie de Paris in February, 2021 .
