Biography

A person who has music is bound to have a mind as broad as a great ocean and as magnificent as a great mountain, and so the voice of the ocean and the mountain responses to calls ---- but he is not yet Heaven’s messenger. This man in front of us flies over and wanders on his beloved land. When hubhub grows quiet, he gets purity from dewdrops, flying sound from fallen flowers, sing from streams and rebirth from destruction. And then he strings all these into a magic wand, producing luxurious notes to his heart’s content ----you must listen and touch with your sensibilities and experience. That is perhaps what you have lost…

Liu Xiaogeng, born in Yunnan, China in 1955, is an associate professor at Yunnan Arts University, and member of China Musicians Association. In 1978, he was admitted to Yunnan Arts University to study composition under Mr. Zhao Kuanren. Soon after that, he began to write music.

He is talented and extremely sensitive. He even doesn’t believe that music is from strings, keys or reeds. He takes heart beating and blood running as evidence that life has always had melody and harmony. He proves his existence in this way.

In 1992, he learned conducting from American conductor George Mcdow. In 1996 he learned composition from Francisco F. Feliciano and Ramon P, Santos. Between 1996 and 1997, he was invited by the Philippines Asian Art College as a visiting scholar. During his stay in the Philippines, he attended the 18th Composers Conference and was invited by the conference to write music for the opening ceremony. His chorus and percussion music “Tattoo” was a great success at the conference. His “Double Trapeze Achang Shoot the Sun”, “Fantasia in 2000” and other instrumental music and dance music has been presented repeatedly in the UAS, Spain, Japan, Singapore and South Korea. His music enjoys great prestige.

He has gone beyond almost all the boundaries of music: symphony, dance drama, chorus,  vocal solo, instrumental solo, television, and full-length concert in the open air. He makes static intentions and images move and flow, giving them a musical soul.
