Biography
The Shanghai Opera House was established in 1956 and its predecessor was the Xin-an Ensemble which was established in 1935. After the development over the last half century the Shanghai Opera House made its splendid marks in opera, dance drama, musical, chorus, symphony and dance. It also provided the stage for those famous artists in Chinese history such as Ren Guizhen, Shi Honge, Li Zhonglin, Shu Qiao, etc. Nowadays, the Shanghai Opera House gathers numbers of artists who are famous both at home and abroad including Wei Song, Zhang Guoyong, Lin Yousheng, Yang Xiaoyong, Chi Liming, Zhang Feng, Han Peng, Xu Xiaoying, Xiong Yufei, Zhang Yuzhao, Song Jie, Chen Han, Tao Le, Chen Yangyuetong and others. It has made the Shanghai Opera one of the best known and most influential performing groups in China.
The Shanghai Opera House strives to reach a balance between the originals and the classics. Among its repertoire there are lots of important original dance dramas such as Dagger Society, Phoenix in the Qi Mountain, and later it produced numbers of original operas such as Thunderstorm, King of Chu, The Wager, When It Is In Bloom, Song of Yanzi, original musicals such as National Theme, original dance dramas Zhou Xuan, In the Shadow of the Moon as well as symphonic choruses and modern Dances. Moreover the Shanghai Opera House also has a rich repertoire of the classics including the western classic operas Carmen, Tosca, La Boheme, Attila, Turandot, Otello, La Traviata, Madama Butterfly, Aida, The Nose, the Chinese classic operas Sister Jiang, Savage Land and the symphonic chorus Yellow River Cantata, Carmina Burana, Requiem, Beethoven's Symphony No. 9, etc.The high quality performances brought the audience wonderful experiences in art.
