Rudolph Tang (唐若甫) is a freelance music journalist based in Shanghai and Beijing. He has covered classical music and opera since 2000.

He used to be the English support of Music Lover magazine (音乐爱好者) published by Shanghai Music Publishing House and special correspondent of Philharmonic magazine (爱乐杂志) published by SDX Publishing Company in Beijing during his days studying English linguistics and literature at Tongji University. His first concert review was published on Philharmonic magazine in 2001 when he was 21 years old. It was a mixed review on Tan Dun’s Water Music.

Subsequently he has reviewed for major Chinese publications over 600 performances including concerts and new opera productions which took him to London, Edinburgh, Derby, Cardiff, Gateshead, Glasgow, York, Amsterdam, Munich, Düsseldorf, Saarbrücken, Köln, Salzburg, Vienna, Salzkammergut, Lucerne, Zurich, Paris, Cannes, Nice, Milano, Venice, Torino, Viareggio, Madrid, Barcelona, Brussels, Hasselt, Maastricht, Bratislava, Prague, Budapest, Tallinn, Pärnu, Helsinki, Turku, Lahti, Bergen, Røros, Trondheim, Copenhagen, Moscow, St Petersburg, Sydney, Nagasaki, Mumbai, Solo City, Kuala Lumper, Taipei, Taichung, Kaohsiung, Hong Kong, Macau, UNHQ, New York City, Atlanta as well as dozens of cities in mainland China.

Two years after graduation, he joined Gramophone magazine Chinese edition in Beijing, initially as assistant editor and Editor since early 2006. He was made a jury member of the MIDEM Classical Awards in 2008.

October 2008 till April 2013, he was a part time staff member at the China Symphony Development Foundation as well as the Alliance of Asia-Pacific Region Orchestras, heading the research on orchestras’ business model and management pattern, as commissioned by both organizations.

Apart from academic research, he is an occasional contributor to Das Orchester, The Podium, Musical America, Auditorium, FT Chinese, China Daily, GQ, Noblesse and Slipped Disc. He was a frequent guest of Music Radio Beijing from 2006-2013 and appears on Music Radio Shanghai regularly, as well as international conventions of MIDEM, ABO, LAO, FIM-IOC, ISPA, IAMA, C:N, PEARLE*, FACP, AAPRO. At the same time, he decided to start blogging the music world known to him in English.

His first book The Many Faces of Musicians in China, a collection of music criticism and journalism since 2005, was published by Beijing Normal University Press in September 2014. He enjoys joint authorship of China Creative Digest 2014 & 2015 published by the Ministry of Culture China. A native of Shanghai, he was an honorary donor of Shanghai Symphony Orchestra.
