Biography
He Wu was a child star in China.
She studied, with full scholarships, at the Royal Academy of Music, Guildhall School of Music & Drama, and the Royal College of Music International Opera School. In 2015/16 she was selected as a Young Artist at the National Opera Studio London, where she was supported by the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.
He Wu’s major opera engagements include the lead role of Daiyu in the China première of the San Francisco Opera production Dream of the red chamber; Cio-Cio San in Madama Butterfly at Iford Arts Festival; Receptionist in the world première Between Worlds for English National Opera directed by Deborah Warner and Amor in Orfeo ed Eurydice at the Longborough Festival Opera.
During her time at National Opera Studio, she performs the role of Susanna in Le nozze di Figaro at the Opera North and Sophie in Werther at the Welsh National Opera. At the Royal College of Music Britten Theatre, she sang as Königen der Nacht in Die Zauberflöte; Marie in La Fille du Régiment; Adina in L’elisir D’amore, and Princesse & Le Feu in L'enfant et les sortilèges.
She won the Lies-Askonas Singing Competition, the Voice of China European Competition, and the Michael Head Prize (English Song Competition, RAM). She has been awarded the Annett Concert Prize at the 52nd IVC International Vocal Competition ’s Hertogenbosch, Sybil Tutton Award from Help Musicians UK, and Samling Scholar among UK music conservatoires. She was also a finalist in the Kathleen Ferrier Competition, the Francisco Viñas International Singing Competition, and the Jette Parker Young Artist programme at Royal Opera House.
He Wu also very much enjoys the concert platform. She has worked as a soloist in Wiener Symphoniker with Philippe Jordan, Berlin Symphoniker with Lior Shambadal, London Symphony Orchestra, China National Symphony Orchestra, and many others. She had performed at venues such as Royal Albert Hall, Royal Festival Hall, Barbican Centre, National Center for Performing Arts (NCPA, Beijing),Shanghai Oriental Art Center, Theater aan de Parade, and Wigmore Hall.
She is invited as a guest soloist at the International Opera Awards and International Kammeroper Rheinsberg Schloss Opera Festival. and was also chosen to represent the exceptional Chinese Opera singers to sing before the First Lady of China, Madam Peng, on President Xi’s visit in the UK in 2015.
Engagements in 2019/20 season include a return to English National Opera for Dew Fairy in Hansel and Gretel and cover of Belinda in Dido and Aeneas, as well as cover Madam Mao in Nixon in China.
