Biography
Violinist YUN TANG, a member of the Los Angeles Philharmonicsince 1986-87 season, born in Shanghai, a leading concert soloist in China. She began to play piano at age six and started the violin at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music when she was nine. She made her public solo debut at eleven at the Shanghai Spring Music Festival. At age 19 she was appointed concertmaster of the Shanghai Beijing Opera Orchestra. She has won numerous top awards in nationwide music competitions and was honored as special resident soloist for the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra and the Beijing Central Philharmonic Orchestra. She has given many concerts and recitals all over the continental China and special TV and radio performances. She also gave many master classes at conservatories and music schools throughout China.
All her recordings were best sellers. She was in the award-winning documentary film From Mao to Mozart with Isaac Stern.
In 1980, she came to the West, studying violin with Ivan Galamian in New York, and with Yehudi Menuhin and Helen Dowling in London. Yun Tang made her Western debut with the Zurich Chamber Orchestra at the 1980 Gstaad Festival. She played Paganini's Concerto No. 1 with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in the Royal Festival Hall in 1982 as her London debut, a performance that received a public ovation and critical acclaim.
With Harold Holt Ltd as her management agent, she played concerts and recitals in the Barbican Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Wigmore Hall, and many return concerts throughout the UK, also in Germany, Norway, Italy, Portugal, Switzerland, Hong Kong, Singapore and the USA. As well as making recordings for radio and television.
Since 2002 she was appointed principal concertmaster for the Asia American Orchestra.
In 2009 She was awarded the "Artist of the year" trophy by The 12th BMF (Beijing Music Festival) for her outstanding life time contribution to the advancement of classical music in China. She also received Bravo Awards (LA) in 2014.
Her videotape Violin Tutor, published in 1995 and republished in VCD version in 2003, is very effective educational material for children's violin study programs (best selling in China). Her solo CD of encore pieces was published in 1998. Her Quick Method for Violin (Intermediate) DVD was published in 2007(on You Tube now).
