Overview
Introduction
"Road" was originally created for pipa and piano in early 1996, and first performed in Tokyo in May of 1996. Later the violin and piano version was first performed at the Lingnan International Modern Music Festival in South Korea. The idea comes from Qu Yuan's widely known sentence of "the way ahead is long, I see no ending; yet high and low I’ll search with my will unbending" from Lisao. The music expresses author’s admiration for the power of Qu Yuan’s great personality, so as for self-encouragement.
The music is written in free sonata form. The composer boldly attempted in pitch system design, using its unique artificial cycle of non-octave scale. The so-called "non-octave cycle" completely jumps out of the natural scale law of taking twelve and a half tones as the mode, not like the normal cycle of octave repeat.
