Introduction
In the mid-thirties, Jiang Wenye (Koh Bunya) devoted all of his energies to the study of Eastern religious music. His aim was to transform the unique qualities of a "neutral" music, which inspired neither joy nor sorrow, into a composition for Western orchestra.
The result of his monumental efforts was the Confucian Temple Rites, a six movement orchestral masterpiece which maintains the spirit of an original body of music performed over the centuries in honor of China's greatest sage-scholar.
