Introduction
Robert Schumann's set of Six Concert Etudes on Caprices of Paganini, Op. 10 (1833) is more elaborate, imaginative, and technically demanding than the similarly titled set of Op. 3 (1832). Unlike Op. 3, however, which was intended primarily for pedagogical purposes, Op. 10--as its title suggests--was meant for public performance. Schumann's arrangements of Paganini's fiercely virtuosic Caprices follow the originals quite closely; the first, in A flat major, was the inspiration for the "Paganini" movement of Schumann's Carnaval, Op. 9 (1833 - 35).
